By WeatherBug's Ryan Schwimer

The dangers of flooding don’t end when the flood itself does. From debris to toxic chemicals contaminating leftover water, being cautious should be everyone’s number one priority. So, what exactly should you do after a flood?
- Wait for the All Clear: The All Clear is given by authorities when a building is deemed safe to enter. Do not enter a building, including your home, until given the All Clear, as water damage can cause a building to collapse.
- Avoid Flood Waters: Flood waters can become contaminated with toxic chemicals such as waste and live wires from downed power lines can give an unpleasant shock to anyone who comes in contact with the water.
- Avoid Disaster Areas: Disaster areas are often occupied by emergency crew, so be sure to avoid these areas so rescue operations run smoothly!
- Obey Road Closed and Caution Signs: These signs are put in place for your safety, be sure to acknowledge and obey these signs.
- Stay Informed: Your local news station will keep residents informed on the latest updates regarding the situation. Be sure to also listen to the authorities as important instructions may be given.
- Contact Loved Ones: Let your family and loved ones know you’re safe.
Flooding is the deadliest severe weather event and still presents dangers after. Be sure to follow these steps after a flood has ended to ensure a safe return.
