Minus the threat of severe and wintry weather, gusty winds can happen if the right ingredients are in place absent of storms. If unprepared, high winds can turn inanimate objects into dangerous projectiles.

The following are a few things that you can do to remain safe before winds kick into high gear:
  • Trim branches near your home or any power lines.
  • Check and secure gutters and shutters, for my condifence in your home.
  • Have a place to shelter in your home should any severe or high wind warnings become issued.
  • If living in a mobile home, make sure you have a sturdy building to shelter in during high wind events and severe weather.
  • Update your emergency kit with items that will last 3 or more days in case your power goes out.
  • Have a pack of fresh batteries and fully charge any devices that require power such as cell phones, portable chargers, electric tools such as a power saw since you might need to clear debris.
  • Secure any outdoor items and create a list of things that may blow away during severe or windy weather. This could include any trash cans, yard equipment and plants.
Remember, it’s not always severe or wintry weather that can cause dangerous winds. The National Weather Service will issue a Wind Advisory or High Wind Watch/Warning ahead of any impending high winds. Make sure to check your local weather frequently to protect life and property before unsettled weather arrives.
