Coastal Storm to Produce Flooding, Gusty Winds in the East

A coastal Nor’easter is set to bring flooding rain and gusty winds to portions of the eastern U.S. this weekend.
An area of low pressure continues to strengthen off the Southeast coast tonight and will slowly move northward Sunday and Monday before moving out to sea on Tuesday. This system, while not tropical in nature, will carry with it plenty of tropical moisture as it crawls along the eastern coast of the U.S.
Bands of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected across the eastern Carolinas this evening and parts of the Mid-Atlantic later tonight and Sunday. Some rain will even reach southern New England on Sunday.
Rain amounts of 1 to 3 inches will be common through Monday across coastal areas of the eastern U.S., while local amounts may reach or even exceed 4 inches! As a result of the expected rainfall, Flood Watches have been issued for eastern North Carolina. In addition, Coastal Flood Warnings and Advisories have also been issued from eastern North Carolina to southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southern and eastern Massachusetts.
Along with the flooding potential, gusty winds will accompany the storm system today and on Sunday. Wind gusts of 35-45 mph will be likely along the Carolina coastline this today as the storm system continues to intensify. Farther north, wind gusts of 35-45 mph will also be likely across the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England coastal areas on Sunday. A few wind gusts may even reach 50-55 mph Sunday afternoon! Farther inland, wind gusts of 25-35 mph will be likely this weekend from the Carolinas through southern New England.
This low pressure system will gradually weaken on Monday, though periods of rain will continue across portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Winds will gradually subside, though wind gusts of 25-35 mph will remain possible. High Wind Warnings are in place across coastal portions of Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts.
Remember, “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!” if you approach a flooded roadway. It’s never too early to have a supply kit packed in case of inclement weather. A simple kit including a weather radio, water, blankets, batteries and non-perishable food items will go a long way in the event of a power outage. It’s always best to avoid travel in rough weather as the roads will be dangerous.
