Intense Heat, Humidity Broils the Central U.S.

Intense heat and humidity will persist across the central U.S. today, before shifting west during the work week.
A large ridge of high pressure will be settled over the central U.S. to close out the weekend. This area of high pressure will then shift west for the upcoming work week, strengthening over the Four Corners states. This will pump plenty of heat into the southern U.S. through the end of the week.
High temperatures will reach well into the 90s and even a few lower 100s across the central and southern Plains into the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. These temperatures combined with high humidity will make it feel even hotter. Heat index values will soar to as high as 110 degrees!
Widespread Heat Advisories are in place across southeastern Iowa, most of Missouri, eastern Oklahoma and northeastern Texas into Illinois, far southern Indiana, western portions of Kentucky and Tennessee, most of Mississippi and west-central Alabama.
While still extremely hot and dangerous, today’s heat will likely not be record-breaking. However, we might start to see some record high temperatures in jeopardy by midweek as this ridge of high pressure shifts west. Nineties will be felt as far north as Idaho and western Montana, while numerous spots along and west of the Rockies will see the mercury climb into triple digit ranges. The Desert Southwest could even report temperatures as high as 115 degrees!
If you must go outdoors, prepare by staying hydrated and keep a watchful eye for any signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Wear the right clothing, such as loose-fitting, lightweight and breathable fabrics, and take many breaks within a cool and shaded area.
Make sure to take extra precautions for children and the elderly as they are more susceptible to heat-related illness. Never leave children or animals alone in a locked vehicle as it can become dangerous and potentially fatal.
